Welcome To Our Website!

Thanks for dropping by our website this April! The Winter Olympics and the World's are over, but the 2026 U.S. Adult Figure Skating Championships are on April 8-11 at the Atlanta Ice Forum in Duluth, Georgia. The club just completed its Fun In The Sun competition and is preparing for its Summer Showcase end of May, we'll post details of the event as they become available!

The Tri-Cities Figure Skating Club of Washington State was formed in 1988 and has operated continuously since that time. Members of the club sponsor, organize and host figure skating events for skaters in the Tri-Cities Richland, West Richland, Kennewick, Pasco, Burbank, Finley, Benton City) area of Washington State including summer shows, holiday shows, clinics, lessons, and parties. Some of the club members and club coaches also offer skating lessons in a variety of skating disciplines.

Our club skates at the Toyota Arena in Kennewick, WA. We are your local chapter of the United States Figure Skating Association (USFS), the governing body of the sport of figure skating. You can join our club at any time of the year to help support club Showcase events, holiday parties, and local USFS testing sessions and competitions. Our club is a member of the Pacific Northwest Interclub Association and has hosted local, regional, and national competitions including US vs. World (1998), Keri Lotion Team Event (1999) and the 2003 Northwest Pacific Regional Championships, as well as our annual Fun-In-The-Sun competition. We also participate in numerous events sponsored by other figure skating clubs and organizations around the Pacific Northwest which we encourage you to explore. We are always adding new figure skating links and resources on our website to help skaters find the skating information they're looking for.

If you have any questions about our club, feel free to reach us.

Testing

U.S. Figure Skating tests serve as a prerequisite for competition and offer an opportunity for athletes to achieve personal goals in the sport. While competitive skaters are required to participate in the U.S. Figure Skating test structure in order to compete, all skaters may opt to take tests as a means of continually challenging themselves and their skating abilities. Tests are available in skating skills, singles, pairs and ice dance, and a separate track is available for adults age 21 and older. When a skater passes the final test in each pathway, they earn the honor of becoming a U.S. Figure Skating Gold Medalist. For comprehensive information about the testing pathways, visit the US Figure Skating's Testing Page.

HOW TO TEST
Skaters may test one of three ways:
1. Scheduled test sessions hosted by a figure skating club
2. Submit a competition protocol from a sanctioned U.S. Figure Skating competition. This option is available for free skate, pairs and free dance tests at the juvenile-senior levels and select adult levels.
3. Work with your coach to do virtual testing. Make sure your USFS membership is current and make sure you are compliant with all USFS requirements for virtual testing before you submit materials to them.
Adults are able to test in the adult testing structure.
The qualifications and standards for all tests are specified in the current version of the U.S. Figure Skating Rulebook.
You can view the US Figure Skating rulebook and bylaws at their website at https://usfigureskating.org/sports/2025/8/9/rulebook-bylaws.aspx.

Membership Types

Beginning skaters usually start in group lessons with the Toyota Arena Learn to Skate program and then join the Tri-Cities Figure Skating Club once they advance to private lessons and testing in the United States Figure Skating Association (USFS) or competing in USFS competitions. There are two types of memberships involved:
Learn to Skate USA membership is your introduction to the USFS. Membership benefits include secondary sport insurance, a USFS welcome packet, and the opportunity to participate in LTS performances as well as USFS sanctioned events such as the TCFSC's Fun in the Sun competition at the Arena. Registration for Learn to Skate USA is at the website https://yourtoyotaarena.com/ice-skating-lessons/.
TCFSC membership is with the USFSA which allows a skater to enter USFSA sanctioned competitions and take USFS tests. Learn about USFS testing at https://usfigureskating.org/sports/2025/12/2/test-structure.aspx. A TCSFC membership allows skaters or their parents to serve on the Board of Directors and supports TCFSC-sponsored events like the Christmas Showcase, Halloween Skating Social, and our local USFS test session and competition. Membership with the Tri-Cities Figure Skating Club can be completed online through the Entryeeze website at http://comp.entryeeze.com.

Figure Skating Disciplines

"Figure skating" is a very broad term for a variety of disciplines within the sport. This page aims to explain the disciplines skaters can choose from, those which are currently supported by the club and the competitive tracks and opportunities within each discipline. The following are the skating disciplines that the club currently supports through coaching and competitive opportunities.

Singles Freestyle
Singles Freestyle is the discipline in figure skating that most spectators are familiar with. In free skating, or "Singles Freestyle" skating, a competitive skater performs a program that lasts anywhere from 1 to 4-1/2 minutes, is composed of elements such as jumps and spins, skated to music. Members also compete in "Showcase."

Ice Dance (Solo, Partnered, Line and Shadow)
Note: Ice dance is one of the skating disciplines where age is no barrier. Many adults and senior adults nationwide enjoy this discipline for both its athletic value and its social aspects. Additionally, many skaters ice dance as a supplement to the freestyle discipline to improve footwork and artistry in their sport.
Paired ice dance features a male and female skating togeether, hand in hand, in unison, but instead of performing jump and spin elements the team completes difficult dance patterns, step sequences and maneuvers while showcasing exceptional interpretation of music and precise steps. With roots in ballroom dancing, ice dance requires strong technical skating skills and excellent musicality.
Ice dance competitions consist of two segments: a rhythm dance and a free dance. The rhythm dance features required elements, including lifts, step sequences and pre-determined dance patterns performed to a specific rhythm of music within a required tempo range. Each team will show off their technical skating ability and style as they try to earn the most points heading into the free dance.
The free dance, like the rhythm dance, features step sequences, lifts and a broad selection of difficult skating skills, but the team skates to a music and tempo of their choosing, with a goal of pulling off an entertaining, moving and inspiring performance that looks effortless despite its difficulty. Innovative choreography, timing and rhythm are paramount. After the second segment of competition, the scores from the rhythm dance and free dance are added together to determine overall placement.
Solo ice dancing is identical to paired ice dancing except that a single person does the dance patterns/steps. Line ice dancing is more like the ice dancing shows you attend for entertainment. Shadow dancing is like paired ice dancing except that the pair are not in contact and skate identical patterns and steps together. All these forms of ice dancing are getting VERY popular across the world right now as competitions introduce these categories.

Volunteers who will be regular contact with Athletes are required to complete the Safesport training and undergo a background check through the US Figure Skating Safesport program. Athletes who are over 18 and who skate in a team or pair with an under-18 skater are also required to complete the training. Coaches are required to take the training to be compliant with USFS. Club Merchandise
The club carries it's own merchandise at https://www.personaliteez.com/Tri-Cities-FSC-s/1878.htm.

Where can I skate around here?
Our links page at https://tcfsclub.org/links.htm has a variety of ice skating venues in the state.

Where can I buy skates around here?
Used skates: look for our "Skate Swap" at least once a year by watching this website's Classified Ads section.

New skates can be purchased at:
Hockey Source (in Pasco) carries Jackson and Reidell figure skates and blades and can special order other products as needed. Proper fit is critical; having your foot measured correctly is essential. For skates purchased at Hockey Source, their staff will select a skate appropriate for your skating level and help you fit your boot properly.
Online - while online purchases of skates are generally discouraged by club leadership, Jackson and Reidell figure skates are readily available online at sites like https://www.amazon.com and https://figureskatingstore.com. Measure your foot using the manufacturer's guidelines.

How do I take care of skates?
Wipe off your blades and use cloth "soakers" to cover your blades in your skate bag so that the blades do not scratch or nick.
Blade guards are used to protect your blades when you are walking around the rink. Don't store your blades with guards on; the moisture trapped in the guard will cause your blade to rust.
Soakers and guards can be purchased at the Hockey Source or online.
"Air out" your skates to prevent mildew and prolong the life of the padding inside the skate.
Don't leave skates in a hot car for extended periods of time.
Blades should be sharpened about every 40 hours of ice time.
Hockey Source (Pasco) sharpens beginner to the most advanced (Pattern 99 and Gold Star) blades. Work can be completed in a few hours. $12
Toyota Arena (Kennewick) sharpens figure skating and hockey skates at the lobby counter. Work can be completed in a day. $6
Skaters can also take their skates to be sharpened by someone that specializes in sharpening figure skates. Bill Dodd (Coeur D'Alene) NorthWest Skates
